Cash For Kids, the charity of the radio stations Free Radio and Greatest Hits Radio, has joined forces with the Council to bring back the Coventry Sports Challenge.
The fundraising challenge aims to increase access to sporting activities for local children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
In 2019 the Coventry Sports Challenge raised over £35,000, helping to ensure hundreds of children from across the city were given opportunities that, due to their circumstances, were ordinarily not available to them.
The Challenge in 2019 was part of Coventry’s year as European City of Sport and returning in 2021 to build on the legacy of the year.
Sports clubs and groups from within the CV1-CV6 postcode areas are invited to apply to take part in the Challenge. Successful finalists will be given advice and support on fundraising and marketing from the Cash for Kids and Coventry City Council teams. Finalists are given four weeks to fundraise in the most creative, innovative, and safe ways as they can.
In addition to the funds they’ve raised, the top three fundraising finalists will win extra funding of £3000, £2000 and £1000 respectively. Further prizes are awarded for best use of social media and the most creative fundraising idea.
Coventrians FC were the Sports Challenge Champions in 2019, walking away with a total of £10,529.
John Dalziel, from Hits at Breakfast on Free Radio, said: “I’m thrilled that the Coventry Sports Challenge is returning this year. We know it’s been a tough year for local sports clubs and also for young people across the city. For our charity to be able to join forces with Coventry City Council again to bring back the Sports Challenge is amazing.
“Hopefully, we’ll see lots of local clubs applying to take part. and some amazing fundraising taking place to help get more local kids active & involved in sport.”
Clubs can join a virtual Q&A session about the Challenge on Wednesday 28 April at 6pm. Details on how to join this session, along with all the Sports Challenge application details can be found on the Free Radio website.
