As part of National Apprenticeship week, we are showcasing the impact that apprenticeships have had on our colleagues and how they benefit the council.
One of the Council’s Facilities Management Apprentices takes us through their apprenticeship journey so far:
“I was trying to find a career that I would enjoy and somewhere I could progress my knowledge and experience through a qualification whist having the opportunity to put my skills into practice. I initially applied for a role as an Apprentice Electrician at the council but was also advised that my skills would be suited in Facilities Management. I applied for the Facilities Management apprenticeship and over a year into this role I know that this was the right role for me.
I started off with little idea of what Facilities Management involves, but thanks to the support of my team and via my apprenticeship qualification I have gained a huge amount of knowledge both within the role and within the council in general. My personal skills have also developed over the period since I have been here as my confidence with my own ability has grown hugely. I have been able to find something I now enjoy and feel motivated to achieve within my apprenticeship.
My apprenticeship is due to finish this year and my team is looking at supporting me into a new role after this where I can train to become a Surveyor working with Compliance and alongside other areas within Facilities Management. There I can utilise my skills and further my knowledge whist I expand my options for other roles.
I can take the skills I have developed in my apprenticeship into future jobs knowing I have gained everything I need to progress in later years with new roles that come up for me internally and my career path in general.”
