The Kobzar’s Prayer for Ukraine

2 May @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free
Jurij Fedynskyj, a 48-year-old Ukrainian American, was born in the United States and has lived in Ukraine for the past 23 years. Jurij is a musician, researcher and instrument maker, who has been reviving the lost music and spiritual tradition of the Kobzar. These were travelling musicians, storytellers and spiritual leaders who for centuries spread their art and wisdom throughout Ukraine.
With the rise of Stalin and the Soviet Union, the Kobzars were killed, their instruments destroyed, and their traditions almost forgotten. But Jurij and his colleagues work to recreate the lost traditional instruments, including the kobza.
For the past 12 years, Jurij Fedynskyj has worked to resurrect the traditional Ukrainian torban, bandura and kobza.
Jurij witnessed the war in Ukraine first-hand. When Russia invaded Ukraine, Jurij and his fellow minstrels performed in shelters and barracks. Wherever possible, his guild of minstrels performed for desperate civilians and soldiers alike.
Jurij performs his concerts for free, with donations going to support Ukraine and to finance future tours of places on the battlefield front line. Aside from a musical concert, Jurij will host a talk, in English, about the war, from his firsthand accounts, and play his national instruments.
Jurij has embarked on a two month tour of UK and Ireland.  His performance in Coventry is hosted by the Ass’n of Ukrainians in Great Britain (Coventry Branch).
