Mendelssohn’s Elijah

18 May @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Mendelssohn’s Elijah is one of the three greatest oratorios in the classical, choral music repertoire. It’s a large-scale composition for choir, orchestra, and soloists, that portrays the life of the Old Testament prophet Elijah through a series of dramatic episodes of faith, doubt, and redemption. Mendelssohn’s score captures the emotional depth of the narrative, ranging from the thunderous intensity of the confrontation between Elijah and the prophets of Baal to the tender moments of solace and prayer.

One of the oratorio’s most iconic passages is the aria ‘If with all your hearts’ a poignant solo that showcases Mendelssohn’s gift for melody and emotional expression. The soaring lines of the aria, set against a backdrop of delicate orchestration, convey the sincerity and strength of Elijah’s message of hope and repentance.

Throughout Elijah, Mendelssohn demonstrates a remarkable ability to balance grandeur with intimacy, blending majestic choral passages with intimate solo moments to create a truly immersive musical experience. The oratorio’s enduring popularity is a testament to its timeless themes and the enduring power of Mendelssohn’s music to inspire and uplift audiences.

The Coventry Philharmonic Society will be performing Mendelssohn’s Elijah and has assembled a superb set of musicians: Miles Taylor (Elijah), Dale Harris, Rachel Gilmore, Hannah Davey, Colin Druce (Organ), Coventry Philharmonic Choir, Leamington Chamber Orchestra, David Wynne (Conductor).

The concert will be performed at All Saints Parish Church, Leamington, CV31 1AA, starting at 7.30pm Saturday 18 May 2024.
