Henry Purcell: Sacred and Secular Vocal Music

7 June @ 7:30 pm - 9:15 pm

Henry Purcell – Sacred and Secular Vocal Music
Friday 7 June, 7.30pm, St. Mary Magdalen Church, Sir Thomas White’s Road, Coventry
Charpentier Ensemble (director: Alexander Norman)
Join us for a concert of vocal music by Henry Purcell and other composers of the English baroque. The programme ranges from beautifully expressive songs to works infused with the spirit of dance. Alongside some of Purcell’s most celebrated vocal works are rarely performed compositions from less well-known composers of the period, such as William Turner’s exquisite Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in A major.

Charpentier Ensemble is a vocal consort based in Coventry and formed of singers mostly local to the West Midlands, some of whom also sing with such ensembles as Ex Cathedra, the Choir of Holy Trinity Church Coventry and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Chamber Choir. The concert is part of celebrations marking the 90th anniversary of the consecration of St. Mary Magdalen Church, highly regarded for its stunning acoustic.

There will be an interval, with refreshments (included in the admission price). Tickets are available on the door. Disabled access to the church is available.

Programme includes:
Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in A major – William Turner
Excerpts from ‘King Arthur’ – Henry Purcell
‘Hush, no more’ (from ‘The Fairy Queen’) – Purcell
‘In these sweet woods’ (from ‘Venus and Adonis’) – John Blow
Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in G minor – Purcell
Solos and duets by Purcell and other composers of the English baroque

£10 (adults), free admission for under 18s
