What is Flag Football?

For those unfamiliar with flag football, it’s a fast-paced, non-contact version of American football. Instead of tackling opponents, players must pull a flag from the ball carrier’s belt to stop play. The game emphasises strategy, speed, and precision, offering an exciting alternative to the more physical form of American football.

A Strong Start

The day began with an unexpected forfeit from the London Amazons, leaving the Panthers with a long wait before their first game against the Leicester Huntsmen. When they finally hit the field, Coventry wasted no time making their presence felt. Behind starting quarterback Alice Briggs, the Panthers dismantled the Huntsmen 47-0, with Briggs orchestrating the offence to perfection through a series of deep passes and precise play calling.

A Solid Follow-up Performance

The second game of the day saw second-string quarterback Alice McGuigan step in against the Iceni Spears. Despite Iceni’s challenges (playing their fourth game of the day with only five players) the Spears put up a valiant effort. McGuigan, however, proved just as effective, leading the team to another commanding 46-0 win.

Defensive Dominance

On the defensive side, cornerback Abi Snelson was the standout performer. Snelson led the team in tackles and interceptions, including a pick-six that energised the team and secured the day. Her defensive efforts were key in keeping the Panthers’ opponents off the scoreboard across both games.

Looking Ahead

The Coventry Panthers have set the tone for what promises to be an exciting WFFL season. With their potent offence and lockdown defence, they’re already looking like one of the teams to beat. Fans can expect more thrilling performances as the Panthers aim to start a push for a playoff spot.
